Welkom is a city in the Free State province northeast of Bloemfontein. It is the core of the Free State gold fields, serving several uranium and gold mines. In addition to mineral ore, Welkom produces such products as beef, steel and wood.
The city has a technological institute and a technical college. Welkom is served by a small airport and a part of the main railway between Cape Town and Johannesburg. The city is internationally known for the Grand Prix racing circuit located at its edge. The city is named after the farm Welkom where gold was first found.
The word welkom is Afrikaans for welcome. It is now the second largest city in the Free State. The proud heritage and history of the town will take you on a journey to a variety of landscapes, richly endowed with diverse peoples and cultures. Situated in the heartland of South Africa’s agricultural belt, mine shafts now guard the horizon where once antelope roamed.
