Vaalwater is a small town situated on the Mokolo River in the Limpopo province. Nearby towns include Naboomspruit, Hermanusdorings, Melkrivier and Palala.
It lies at the southern edge of the rocky Waterberg Massif, which is a biosphere that contains considerable biodiversity, including several large mammals such as Blue Wildebeest, Giraffe and White Rhino. Waterberg was named as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
The vast rock formation was shaped by hundreds of millions of years of riverine erosion to yield varied butte and bluff landform. Vaalwater is a popular start point for travels to Botswana and the Waterberg Massif and is itself becoming a minor destination for tourism. There are a variety of gift shops art and craft as well as restaurants and cafes. Vaalwater has a number of commercial services not common for kilometres around, especially on roads leading to Botswana. These include groceries, banking, doctors, diesel and petrol and a post office.
