Tzaneen is a large town in the Limpopo province situated in the Mopani district. It is in a fertile area with subtropical and tropical agriculture. There are different theories to were the name is derived and range from the Sotho words tsana (basket of hills) to tsaneng (gathering place).

There are various tourist attractions to the small town of Tzaneen, including Magoebaskloof, Tzaneen Dam, the Pekoe View Tea Estate and Haenertsburg. The town is also situated close to a number of game reserves and the town often serves as a thoroughfare for tourists on their way to other tourist destinations in the province such as the Kruger National Park. The Vervet monkey foundation is located just outside Tzaneen town where it cares for over 600 vervet monkeys.

Mostly sunshine, long summer days with pleasant winters. Tzaneen's subtropical conditions provide more suited weather for dense forests than the thorny bushveld above the escarpment. A wide variety of tropical fruits are grown in the Tzaneen area, particularly avocados, mangoes bananas and oranges. Eucalyptus and Pine plantations are also a common site in the area around the town, especially toward Haenertsburg and Magoebaskloof. The plantations serve a number of sawmills located in the area. Within easy reach there are fascinating archaeological sites, nature reserves, large baobab trees and wildlife, as well as a superb range of tourism facilities. The mountainous landscape, the subtropical climate, the lush indigenous vegetation which alternates with plantations, and the largely unspoilt natural environment, make this picturesque area one of the most attractive recreation and tourist areas in South Africa.
