Thohoyandou is a town in the Limpopo Province and is the legislative and administrative centre for the Venda region. It is the former capital of the independent homeland of the Venda people. Its name means head of the elephant in Venda.

Thohoyandou is situated in the south of Venda, on the main road between the Kruger National Park and Louis Trichardt. It is a bustling centre of commerce, well served with shopping complexes, a fascinating museum and a casino and hotel of international standard. It is surrounded by numerous rural settlements situated on the outskirts of the proclaimed area. Thohoyandou is one of the fastest growing towns in the Limpopo Province and the proud heart of the Venda people.

The surrounding areas offer scenic beauty as only the Limpopo Province can offer with settings like Phiphidi Waterfalls, the Holy Forest, Mukumbane Kraal and various other places of interest. Just a few kilometers away from Thohoyandou is where the natural Nandoni Dam is situated. The community fishing industry significantly rose just after the dam was built. Thohoyandou is surrounded by small townships such as Folovhodwe, Muledane, Shayandima, Makwarela, and Maniini. Tea and Coffee plantations abound in the higher slopes. It is a well populated area, dotted with tidy villages.
