Thabazimbi is mining town in the Limpopo province. It is situated at the Ysterberg and is surrounded by the Boshofberg and Witfonteinrand with the majestic Kransberg in the background. The name Thabazimbi means mountain of iron because of the large iron ore reef that was discovered here.
The mine boasts one of the largest mining shafts in Africa. The railway line from Rustenburg reached the area in the 1930s and full scale steel and iron production began. The town was proclaimed in 1953.
The Marakele National Park about 20 km northeast of the town and situated in the heart of Waterberg Mountains characterised by contrasting mountain landscapes, valleys and hills, as well a variety of wildlife.
Climate varies from extremely hot during summer months to moderate during the winter. Thabazimbi is one of the country’s most sought after destinations for lovers of hiking. Many hikes, paths and nature trails cover the town’s beautiful bushveld surroundings. There is a considerable range of tourist and holiday accommodation available, ranging from bed and breakfast accommodation to lodges, chalets, guest houses and backpackers.
