Thaba Nchu is a town in the Free State Province east of Bloemfontein. Its population is comprised mainly of Sotho and Tswana people. The town was settled in the 1830s and officially established in 1873. The town grew larger following the 1913 Natives' Land Act that stated Thaba Nchu as a homeland for Tswana people.
Geographical features include the tips of the mountains from Lesotho, giving it an advantage for large lands with lots of game, therefore they have been able to maintain a game reserve the Maria Moroka game reserve. Various wildlife and bird species, hiking trail, traditional Tswana site, various activities and adventures are plenty in the reserve. The reserve has been named after the political town hero Dr. Maria Moroka. Much of the area surrounding is arable which has made it suitable for large scale farming both commercially and domestically. The town is also known for the Aran hand knitted woolen garments made by the local craftsman.
