Smithfield is a small town in the Free State province. It was founded in 1848 when the governor of the Cape Colony, Sir Harry Smith, required a settlement north of the Orange River. The town is tucked into a horseshoe of hills. The Caledon River bounds Smithfield on the east and south.
The region is drained by different tributaries of this river. Smithfield is a thriving wool growing area, in addition to cattle farming. Ou Grietjie, a cannon used by the Free State in the Basuto wars, has been mounted in front of the magistrate's office. The Caledon River museum is located in the town.
The well maintained local golf course dates back more than 100 years. Its facilities are available to guests, as are local bowls and tennis clubs. Hills surrounding the town are considered well suited to horse riding, hiking and walking birdwatching. Local secondary roads are suitable for mountain biking. Zebra and Blesbok are found in the open savanna. |
