Sasolburg is a large industrial town in the north of the Free State province. It was established in 1954 in order to provide facilities and accommodation for Sasol employees.
Sasolburg is at a high altitude with a large seasonal temperature variation, but relatively dry climate. It is situated on the Vaal river, which separates the Free State from Gauteng, and is not far from the Vaal dam where good watersport spots can be found. The Sasol corporation has sponsored extensive infrastructural developments in Sasolburg, such as an olympic size swimming pool.
A large number of churches and world class athletics facilities can also be found in Sasolburg. The Ettienne Rousseau Theatre plays host to a wide range of Afrikaans artists throughout the year. |
