Pinetown is a small city just inland from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. It is situated west of Durban. The area from Cowies Hill in the east along to Westmead in the west is commonly referred to as the Pinetown area.  Pinetown is known as a motor town, because of many motor dealerships found along Old Main Road.  Pinetown is now part of the larger eThekwini Municipality and has recently grown into a business centre.

It was established in 1850 around the Wayside Hotel, itself built the year before along the main wagon route between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It was named after the governor of Natal, Sir Benjamin Pine. The British built a concentration camp here during the Second Boer War to house Boer women and children. Pinetown was for a time the home of Lord Baden Powell, founder of the Scout Movement. His original house is preserved there.
