Mokopane is a town in the Limpopo province of South Africa. It was established by the Voortrekkers and named Potgietersrus after the Voortrekker leader Piet Potgieter. It was renamed to Mokopane is 2003.
Mokopane is home to the Northern Ndebele speaking tribes. Five kingdoms in the vicinity of the town are Kekana, Langa, Gegana, Lebelo and Langa. Mokopane is two hours from Gauteng and acts as a getaway destination and as a stopover for travelers en route to the Kruger National Park, Zimbabwe and Botswana. The area is typical bushveld with many aloes and acacia trees.
The Mokopane area is one of the country’s richest agricultural areas producing citrus, wheat, tobacco, cotton, beef, maize and peanuts. The area is rich in minerals with the mining of granite, platinum and diamonds as primary mineral resources. The incredible bushveld environment and influences from Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Tsonga, SeSotho, English and Afrikaans cultures give Mokopane a distinctive character.
Mokopane also offers a variety of outdoor activities ranging from hiking, camping and 4x4 trails to birding, angling and game viewing.
