Melmoth is a small town in KwaZulu-Natal which was a gold rush town, founded in 1888. It was named after the resident commissioner of Zululand at the time, Sir Melmoth Osborn. The town was established in the Mthonjaneni district after the annexation by the United Kingdom in 1887. Melmoth is regarded as a good base for travellers wanting to see places of interest close to the town.

The Melmoth area contains one of the largest conservancies in KwaZulu-Natal, which covers an approximate area of 85,000 hectares. The Melmoth Conservancy was placed in the top three in the South African Conservation Awards and top in Natal. The district is absolutely full of animals and the most remarkable of bird types making the area a prime bird sanctuary of the Zululand Birding Route.
