Lydenburg is a town in Mpumalanga situated on the Dorp and Sterkspruit River tributary of the Olifants River at the base of the Long Tom Pass. The name is derived from Dutch meaning Town of Suffering. It has become the heart of the South African fly-fishing industry and is a mining and agricultural centre.
The mining of platinum, chrome and gold and plays a prominent role in the economy of Lydenburg today, as well as its agricultural production.
The town is also the leading soya bean growing district of South Africa and a significant grain, tobacco, cotton and wool growing area. The area around Lydenburg has many rivers and streams which are well stocked with Trout.
With its spectacular scenery, high mountains and rolling grasslands, Lydenburg is an outdoor lover’s paradise. In 2006, the name change of Lydenburg to Mashishing, meaning long, green grass was approved. However, the name still has not caught on. Road signs still say Lydenburg and businesses and local buildings such as the Lydenburg Museum have still kept the old name.
