Kroonstad is a town in the Free State province, approximately 2 hours drive from Gauteng. It is an old town, first established in 1855. It was originally the capital of the Orange Free State. A concentration camp was built here by the British during the Second Boer War to house Boer women and children. Folklore has it that the town was named after a horse named Kroon, belonging to Voortrekker Sarel Cilliers, which drowned in a stream on the site of the present town.
The main industry is agriculture. A caravan park and many more camp sites on the banks of the willow lined Vals River Valsrivier are frequented by watersport enthusiasts and anglers. Activites include hunting and game drives in the Boskoppie game reserve, fishing in the well stocked Vals River or on the Bloemhok Dam, and boating on the Serfontein Dam. Horse riding, gliding and hiking trails are also available. |
