Cullinan is a small town east of Pretoria in Gauteng. In 1902, Sir Thomas Cullinan discovered a rich diamond pipe here and in 1905, the famed Cullinan Diamond was discovered.
The Cullinan diamond is the largest in the world at 3,106 carats, the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found. It was bought by the Transvaal government and presented to King Edward VII.
Cullinan still serves the premier mine, located on a rich diamond-bearing kimberlite pipe, the largest in South Africa. The mine is the third largest diamond producer in the country.
