The First International Conference on Serious Games 2014

Serious games can range from actively engaging exergaming and virtual 3D simulations to sit-down computer and video games. Although serious games go further than pure enjoyment, they leverage gaming elements in order to produce learning across in an entertaining fashion. However, a recent meta-analysis and overview on the value of serious games as a learning instrument have stated a lack of empirical and methodical evidence to decisively support the concept of games based knowledge acquirement. Furthermore, we are thriving in an era of pervasive computing where practically any item can serve as a processing device that is connected to vast networks of another computing device. Harnessing this ambient intellect will bring serious games to large amounts of users who would otherwise not be capacitated or aware to enjoy the benefits of games based learning.

Researchers are therefore invited in this exciting field to make use of this conference to share your findings on serious games and their effectiveness with the serious games community.

The SAERA 2014 Conference takes place at the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel in Durban from Wednesday, 13 August 2014 to Friday, 15 August 2014.  The pre-conference workshops for research development will take place on Tuesday, 12 August 2014.

The topic of the conference will be to investigate the current position of education research in South Africa, and looking ahead to the future directions that research may take. Education research in the past twenty years has relied on a variety of education policies and the carrying out of these policies. Research tends to be qualitative and small scale in nature, although a rising importance on the analysis of large achievement studies in teaching has been seen. SAERA envisages that the conference would provide a platform to reflect on the nature, the idea and the role of education studies at present, and to look forward to new methodological and theoretical trends in the area. The conference will connect with all contexts of research – Higher Education, Training and Further Education, adult education, informal education and schooling.

The 2014 PAA/SAfA conference theme is ‘African Archaeology without Frontiers’, and will cover all aspects of African archaeology and all periods from the earliest hominins to the historical period. This Conference will be held at The University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg from the 14th to 18th of July.

archaeology

The Pan-African Association of Archaeology and Related Studies (PAA) was established in Kenya at the instigation of none other than Louis Leakey, who became the organizing secretary of the 1st Congress, which took place in Nairobi in January 1947. At that ground-breaking Nairobi meeting, Johannesburg was nominated as the host of the second Congress, but the Nationalist government of South Africa which came to power in 1948 withdrew its support for this initiative and the second Congress went to Algiers instead. The aims are to bring together Africanist archaeologists and colleagues in a forum for the exchange of information and ideas; to create contacts between students, researchers and practitioners across Africa in multiple disciplines; to forge links and friendships; and to facilitate and promote inter-African collaboration.

This conference will cover all aspects of African archaeology and all periods from the earliest hominins to the historical period, and the official languages of the conference will be English and French. We are expecting over 500 delegates from Africa, Europe and North America, and among other things we are hoping that this joint meeting will serve to showcase South African resources to potential post-graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research associates from across the continent and beyond.

The Rhodes University’s Anthropology department will be hosting the Crossing Borders, Blurring Boundaries conference. The event will be held at Rhodes University in Grahamstown from the 29th of June to the 2nd of July 2014.

anthropology

In today’s world, crossing borders and its outcomes are interwoven with the unravelling and crafting of peoples’ ways of living and formation of self. Giving an account of the journeying inherent in such crossings calls for intricate forms of attention – attention that is brought to bear on everyday life, its temporalities and locales. It is at the same time a call for a sophisticated blending of theory, empirical research and philosophical approach.

Anthropologists’ intellectual tasks are often to engage in unsettling hegemonic knowledge claims, yet they also enter productive cross-disciplinary encounters, in which shared audibility is hoped for, and in which disciplinary reshaping is incorporated.
