Information on Greyton, Western Cape

Greyton is a small town in the Overberg area in the Western Cape, South Africa. The historic Cape Vernacular architecture, tranquil setting amongst the Overberg mountains, and proximity to Cape Town make this a very popular destination for weekenders. The spectacular surrounding countryside comprises some of the best Fynbos in the Western Cape. The outdoor adventurer can also enjoy horse-riding, swimming in the river, mountain-biking and 4x4 trails in Greyton.

Greyton was originally founded as an agricultural village. All landowners were self sufficient in growing their own produce and by keeping livestock for domestic use. The leiwater system was channelled to each property to provide fresh running water to each household. This system still operates successfully today. Greyton was named after Sir George Grey and was once the site of the farm Weltevreden.
