It is situated between Clifton and Sea Point close to the city centre, the V&A Waterfront, the convention centre and the Table Mountain cableway as well as the world famous Clifton Beaches. Bantry Bay was originally called Botany Bay after a botanical garden that was planted here for the cultivation of medicinal herbs. The name was changed during World War I. Bantry Bay is overlooked by Lion's Head, which is the eroded core of an ancient volcano. There is a plaque on the seashore that commemorates the observation by Charles Darwin, that during his visit to the Cape, this was noted as the site of a unique geological feature, being the intrusion of Basaltic volcanic rock into granitic rock. Bantry Bay is one of the most sought after estate areas in the city due its trendy upmarket appeal.
