Makhado (Louis Trichardt) is a town situated at the foot of the Soutpansberg mountain range in the Limpopo province of South Africa. Like many other towns in South Africa, Louis Tichardt had its origins in Voortrekker settlement of the area. A typical ‘boere’ town, Makhado (Louis Trichardt) is small, charming and popular because it serves as a thoroughfare for all of those coming from or going to the Kruger National Park. The national road, the N1, runs right through the town, which makes it an important commercial, industrial and residential centre in this northern part of the country - no surprise that it is regarded as the ‘gateway to Africa’.

Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has become a centre for fruit growing, and tropical fruit orchards abound here. There are mangoes and litchis, bananas and a wide selection of nuts. The 2500-hectare, a privately owned reserve just to the south of Makhado, is home to more than 50 mammal and 230 bird species, the latter including the rare Gymnogene, the Gorgeous Bush Shrike and the Bronzewinged Courser.
