About Lanseria, Gauteng, South Africa

Lanseria is a place northwest of the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the location of the Lanseria Airport, which is one of the four airports in this city, and the busiest in Africa in terms of aircraft movement per day.

Just to the West of Johannesburg lies the Lanseria International Airport, a general Aviation airfield that first started to take shape in 1972, when two Pretoria pilots forsaw the need for a general aviation airport to the West of Johannesburg.

Despite bad weather conditions during the construction, and a shortage of steel for the hangers, the international airport was completed on schedule, and was officially opened to air traffic on 16 August 1974. On that day, a Learjet ZS-MTD became the first jet to land at Lanseria. Lanseria Airport is ideally situated for corporate jets traveling to Johannesburg or Pretoria. With the recent expansion of the Main Terminal building (completed in 2002) and the upgrade of all the runways and taxiways,

Lanseria is more geared than ever before to meet and exceed, the high demands of international aviation. Lanseria Airport is also close to the World Heritage Site of the Cradle of Humankind.

Lanseria International Airport complies with all the stringent standards set by International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).  The airport also regularly exceeds the requirements set by the SA Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).All the relevant government departments such as Immigration, Border Police (SAPS), SARS (Customs and Excise), Health, Nature Conservation, Agriculture, National Intelligence and Veterinarian Services are also represented at the airport.  For the transportation of live animals, animal products and agricultural products, prior notification is required.

Lanseria International Airport is ideally located with Sandton in close proximity.  Easy access is obtained by utilising the existing N14 and N1 highway infrastructure, which again provides easy access to the West Rand, Midrand, Centurion and Pretoria.
