Whether you are an outdoor adventurer, want to learn more about the culture and history of an area, or prefer a sedate getaway where you can enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, you will find what you seek in Dinokeng.

The name Dinokeng - a place of rivers - is derived from the languages of the Batswana and Bapedi who traditionally made this region their home. Dinokeng lies in the catchment area of the Olifants and Limpopo Rivers - which means, according to some African cultures, that this is a sacred place with healing powers.

The Dinokeng destination, covering over 200 000 hectares offers you a variety of experiences, making a trip there interesting and worthwhile. It includes the Roodeplaat and Rust de Winter dam areas, as well as the towns of Cullinan, Rayton, Hammanskraal, Moloto and Refilwe. There are over 275 tourist attractions across Dinokeng, each with its own character and offerings. Whether you are there for the day, a weekend or longer, you will be able to have a full and exciting experience in Dinokeng, and you will leave wanting to return to sample new experiences or to re-sample those you have already enjoyed.

Dinokeng Location

Dinokeng, located in the north eastern quadrant of Gauteng, is a Gauteng Provincial Government Blue IQ strategic economic infrastructure investment initiative.

Through development and management of Dinokeng as a tourist destination close to the metropolitan areas of Gauteng, the initiative aims to encourage economic growth, job creation and social upliftment. Sustainable development of the natural, cultural and historical heritage of the area provides tourists with an "Africa in one day" experience.

Dinokeng Cultures

The land has witnessed a number of different cultures, which together form something of a melting pot of history. The Tswana, Pedi, Afrikaans, Ndebele, English and Tsonga-speaking people have all had significant effects upon the land and rolling grasslands of Dinokeng; and Anglo-Boer War blockhouses, battle sites, cemeteries and forts are all evidence of the conflicts that have left their mark.

Dinokeng Accommodation

Dinokeng boasts a diversity of accommodation establishments, quality graded by the Tourism Grading Counsil of South Africa. Some of these picturesque game lodges, hotels, chalets, B & B's and rustic self-catering camps, showcase different historic eras of South Africa. The surrounding scenic natural beauty of Dinokeng will enhance your stay which will be memorable, but also light on your pocket.

Grading of accommodation by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) gives you the ability to make a considered decision relevant to your budget and accommodation expectations.

Dinokeng Attractions

There is a lot to do and see in the Dinokeng Region. Three dams lie in the area - Mkhombo, Rust de Winter and Roodeplaat; the historic homes of the Sammy Marks Museum, the village of Rust de Winter, and what remains of the Wallmansthal Mission all reflect the old ways of life; whilst Dinokeng is one of the country’s prime bird watching areas, second only to Ndumo in the St Lucia area in terms of the diversity of species.

Dinokeng History

Dinokeng is rich in history, particularly of the Setswana, Sepedi, Afrikaans, isiNdebele, English and Xitsonga-speaking people. Today Dinokeng is a vibrant mélange of these many influences.

Onverwacht, established in 1838, is home to the descendants of freed Malay slaves.

Anglo-Boer War blockhouses, battle sites, cemeteries and fortifications are testament to the conflicts of previous centuries. More recently-fought wars have also left their mark with thousands of Italian prisoners of war having been incarcerated at Zonderwater near Rayton, where a memorial in their honour can be found.

Historic homes, such as the Sammy Marks Museum (an authentic Victorian mansion set amongst massive jacaranda trees), buildings within the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum, the village of Rust de Winter and the remains of the Wallmansthal Mission, reflect the life and times of days gone by.

The village of Cullinan, with its Victorian and Edwardian architecture and jacaranda-and-oak lined avenues also takes one back to a forgotten era, to the beginning of the diamond boom in South Africa.
