The Cradle of Humankind is a World Heritage Site about 50 kilometres north west of Johannesburg in the Gauteng province. It contains a complex of limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves, where the 2.3-million year-old fossil nicknamed Mrs. Ples was found in 1947 by John T. Robinson and Dr. Robert Broom.

The name Cradle of Humankind reflects that the site has produced a large number, as well as some of the oldest, hominid fossils ever found. Some dating back as far as 3.5 million years ago. There are many fossil-bearing caves in the Cradle of Humankind.

Sterkfontein alone has produced more than a third of early hominid fossils ever found. Important sites include Sterkfontein, Bolt's Farm, Malapa Fossil Site, Cooper's Cave, Plovers Lake, Drimolen, Minaars Cave, Gladysvale, Gondolin, Haasgat, Kromdraai, Motsetsi, Swartkrans and Wonder Cave.

The Sterkfontein Caves are located about 10km from Krugersdorp and was donated to the University of Witwatersrand by the Stegmann family. A section of the caves is open to the public. There is a gravel platform from which the public can view the excavation site. There is also a tearoom and a small museum in which information about significant findings are on display.
