About Coffee Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Coffee Bay is a village in the Wild Coast region of the Cape Province, South Africa, 38 km north-east from East London. It lies at the mouth of the Coffee Bay river where it empties into the Indian Ocean. There are two resort areas catering to tourists interested in sea fishing to the east and west of the river. The village is in Xhosa country. It has a laid-back atmosphere with low-cost accommodation and unspoilt white sand beaches in Coffee Bay East, backed by forested dunes, lagoons and rivers.

Legend has it that Coffee Bay got it's name from cargo ship that supposedly ran ashore here in the 19th century and spilled its coffee bean shipment on the shore. Coffee Bay offers excellent fishing as well as spectacular walks through coastal bush that is full of bird life. One of the must see places in this area is the `hole in the wall', a geological marvel of wind erosion, this offshore stack featuring a large, almost navigable hole is a popular picnic stop along the coast. Activities include swimming , hiking , fishing and golf among others. The Hluleka Nature Reserve offers scenic views including forests , beaches , lagoons etc.
