Information on Vanderbijlpark, Southern Gauteng

Vanderbijlpark is an industrial city situated next to the Vaal River in the southern Gauteng region of South Africa. With neighbouring towns Vereeniging and Sasolburg, Vanderbijlpark forms the Vaal Triangle, a major industrial region of South Africa. It is home to Vanderbijlpark Steel and is located in the district municipality of Sedibeng and the local municipality of Emfuleni.

The steelworks in Vanderbijlpark is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, it began operating in 1947 and the town, which forms Gauteng's border along the Vaal River, was proclaimed in 1949 and attained municipal status in 1952. Today Vanderbijlpark houses one of the most cosmopolitan communities in South Africa. Vanderbijlpark was named after Dr HJ van der Bijl who oversaw the inauguration of the Iron and Steel Corporations's (ISCOR) first plant at Pretoria in 1934 and then later bought 10 000ha to build a large steelworks and model city for its employees.

Places of interest in Vanderbijlpark include the Enfuleni Resort, an extensive riverbank development and Loch Vaal which is a popular watersports destination.
