Information on Northcliff, Johannesburg

Northcliff is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is a mostly upper-income residential area, located on Northcliff Ridge which overlooks the Central Business District on one side, and the northern suburbs on the other. Cresta Shopping Centre, one of the largest malls in Johannesburg, is located on the border of Northcliff and Cresta. The city's tallest ridge is Observatory at 1 808m, which runs towards Gillooly's Farm in the east, its end point. The city consists of a number of ridges and one of the most northern ones is Northcliff ridge, the site of early 17th century Stone Age settlements, and a favourite spot these days for mountaineering types, kite flyers and model aeroplane enthusiasts.

One of Johannesburg’s older upmarket suburbs, leafy Northcliff, lies north west of the city’s CBD. Many of Northcliff’s large homes lie on steep inclines offering superb views. Northcliff’s tower may no longer be ‘safe’ for night time rendezvous, for which it was once extremely popular, but the ridge, made up predominantly of hard smooth quartzite, offers a number of natural climbs for avid rock climbing fans. The routes are relatively short and the view from the top of Northcliff ridge excellent - the whole of the northern suburbs lie exposed - and on a clear day, one can see as far as Sandton and beyond.

The suburb of Northcliff is bounded along its northwestern side by 14th Avenue, and it is by this road that one finds the closest on-ramp to the N1 highway that skirts around Johannesburg's western suburbs. At the top of the Northcliff Koppie is the Albert's Farm Nature Conservancy, where many species of birdlife can be seen. Northcliff is served by the Cresta shopping mall in Blackheath and by shopping centres at Constantia Park to the west.

Northcliff is well placed for the visitor wishing to see the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam, which are situated just a few blocks to the east of the suburb. The suburb has several schools, both secondary and primary, and is just a few minutes drive away from the Rand Afrikaans University and Wits University.
