Information on Benoni, Gauteng

Benoni is situated in the East Rand region of the Gauteng province in South Africa. Benoni has since 2000 been part of the Ekhuruleni Metropolitan Municipality. Benoni is situated at 5,419 feet (1,652 m) above sea level and covers two sides of a valley that borders four lakes.

The Benoni Country Club started initially as a 9-hole golf course in 1905. Three years later the course was expanded to its full compliment of 18 holes. Today Benoni Country Club is well known as a first class golfing facility with it's meandering tree lined fairways and greens. However the Benoni Country Club has greatly developed its facilities from purely a golf club.

The Club is one of the most sought after Venues on the east Rand with easy access to the N12 Highway. There is a most impressive porte cochere entrance leading to an attractive foyer. The club offers excellent cuisine and a range of menus that may be adapted to individual preferences.

Benoni's inauspicious beginnings were in 1881 when then surveyor-general Johan Rissik found it difficult to assign title deeds to all unclaimed state property. He named the area Benoni (son of my sorrows), after the name given by Rachel to her son in the biblical Book of Genesis. In September 1887, gold was discovered and the Chimes Mine was established by Cornishmen. The village became known as "Little Cornwall" for a time. Sir George Farrar, the chairman of a mining company, undertook the beautification of the rapidly growing mining town in 1904. Minewater was channelled into a band of marshland, and reservoirs stocked with fish were created. Today these reservoirs remain and the area is dotted with many lakes where people fish, boat and relax.
