Vredefort is a small farming town in Free State province with sorghum, sunflowers, cattle, maize, and groundnuts being farmed. The town was established in 1876 on the Vredefort crater which is the oldest and largest visible bolide impact crater in the world. Vredefort got its name after the peaceful conclusion of a threatened war between the Orange Free State and the Transvaal. The Vredefort Dome is South Africa's 7th World Heritage Site.
