Information on Gariep Dam, Free State

The Gariep Dam is located on the Orange River between the Eastern Cape to the south and the Free State to the north and about 30 km north east of Colesburg. It is situated in a gorge at the entrance to the Ruigte Valley some 5 km east of Norvalspont. The Gariep Dam is a concrete gravity-arch hybrid dam; this design was chosen as the gorge is too wide for a complete arch so flanking walls form gravity abutments to the central arch.

Gariep Dam has two main tourist attractions in the Free State, namely the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve and the Resort Aventura Midwaters. Gariep Dam is the most central point of the Republic of South Africa. An excellent road network connects the town to the Eastern Cape, North and South Namibia and Botswana. Gariep Dam also has a airfield with a double tarred runway. International gliding championships are held annually in December at the airfield.
