Information on Clarens, Free State

Clarens is a small town situated in the foothills of the Rooiberge in the Free State province of South Africa and called the "Jewel of the Free State". It was established in 1912 and named after the town of Clarens in Switzerland where exiled Paul Kruger spent his last days.Today it has a flourishing tourist trade, and an artist community. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park with its sandstone formations and cliffs is nearby. Many visitors come to Clarens for the weekend because of the scenics views and village atmosphere.

Clarens is endowed with more trees than most other Free State towns - the fresh, light green willows and colourful blossoms of the many fruit trees are an unforgettable sight in spring time; whilst the magnificent autumn shades of the lombard poplars attract artists, photographers and nature lovers.
