Venues and Conference Centres in Bloemfontein, Free State - Bloemfontein Conferences Information on Bloemfontein, Free StateBloemfontein is Free State's capital and is also known as the 'City of Roses'. Property development is on the up in Bloemfontein and many investors are turning to Bloemfontein for property options. Bloemfontein is centrally situated roughly in the middle of the Free State province, as well as in South Africa. Bloemfontein is the sixth largest city in South Africa and also the Judicial Capital. Bloemfontein has an excellent infrastructure including some of South Africa's best schools, such as Grey College and Eunice, and tertiary institutions. The name, Bloemfontein, means Spring of Flowers and the town lives up to its name. Bloemfontein has thousands of rose bushes which line the roadsides. It has a small nature reserve in the middle of the city and the Orchid House is a must for lovers of flowers. The Free State Botanical Gardens on the outskirts of Bloemfontein covers about 70ha with large areas left in a close to natural state. There are lovely walks, a lawn to chill out on, a dam with a bird hide, a restaurant, an environmental education centre and an indigenous plants nursery. The more formal section of the garden includes a medicinal plants display and a garden highlighting water-conserving ways of gardening. Historical buildings in Bleomfontein include the City Hall, Old Presidency, buildings of judicial implication, the Anglican Cathedral, railway station, the Dutch Reformed twin tower church and many more. The atmosphere that one feels in Bloemfontein is one based on an appreciation of family values with quality of life of prime importance. There is little stress and less haste; the peaceful atmosphere, which is somehow almost tangible, can be felt in every street, on every pavement - all of which are noticeably clean and free of litter. The cost of living in Bloemfontein is also among the most competitive in South Africa. Though historically a predominantly Afrikaner settlement, Bloemfontein was officially founded in 1846 by British army major Henry Douglas Warden as a British outpost in the Transoranje region, at that stage occupied by various groups of peoples including Cape Colony Trek Boers, Griqua and Basothos. With colonial policy shifts the region changed into the Orange River Sovereignty (1848-1854) and eventually the Orange Free State Republic (1854-1902). From 1902-1910 it served as the capital of the Orange River Colony and since that time as the provincial capital of the Orange Free State (later Free State) province as well as judicial capital of the Country. Until 1994 the city was best known as the sole judicial capital of South Africa. It remains the seat for the Supreme Court Of Appeal (formerly the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court)and is generally therefore regarded as the judicial capital. It is also an administrative centre with many private hospitals and educational institutions.
