Information on King William's Town, Eastern CapeKing William's Town stands 1275 ft. above the sea at the foot of the Amatola Mountains, and in the midst of a thickly populated agricultural district. The town is well laid out and most of the public buildings and merchants' stores are built of stone. There are manufactories of sweets and jams, candles, soap, matches and leather, and a large trade in wool, hides and grains is done with East London. Many of the buildings in King William's town date back to the Frontier Wars and the Amatola Museum displays the life and times in the town during that era. The museum also holds the second largest mammal collection in Africa, including the body of Huberta - the much loved hippopotamus who walked more than 1500 km from KwaZulu Natal to the Eastern Cape in the early 1900s, only to be shot dead by hunters one month later.
